I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt in many parts of the country for many years and consider my annual trips to New Mexico to hunt with Jim and Ryan Bates as one of the best. Their in-depth knowledge of the country and ability to hook you up with the beautiful Merriam’s Gobblers that inhabit this gorgeous country is impressive. I’ll admit that before I ventured out there several years ago, I had a preconceived view of what New Mexico terrain would look like. I figured rocks, sand, and rugged terrain. Although that terrain does exist the area they hunt is nothing like I imagined. Instead it was up in the 8000’ elevations in mountains with beautiful valleys and timber loaded with elk, mule deer, and lots of Merriam’s gobbler’s roaming the land. These birds are very vocal and easier to roost compared to other places I’ve hunted. Mornings and afternoons can provide some great action.
